Streete Notes

Kevin Brady

Congratulations and best wishes: to Gerry O’Neill. Winner of this year’s Local Hero Award. “The caliber of local heroes nominated for the Westmeath Examiner Community and Sports Awards held at the park hotel Mullingar, last Thursday evening was simply outstanding. With such a remarkable longlist of entrants, the judges had a difficult task in narrowing it down to a shortlist.” For our community of Streete, however, the choice was clear. The Park Committee are very proud to have nominated Gerry O’Neill, for this prestigious award. Gerry joined our team of community workers in 2015 and has quickly become the heart and soul of our community centre—a man whose quiet strength, generosity, and selfless dedication inspire everyone around him. He is always the first to arrive and the last to leave, giving his time and energy without ever seeking recognition. Whether it’s setting up the hall for activities, guiding other volunteers, welcoming newcomers with warmth, or simply lending a listening ear, Gerry embodies what it truly means to be a local hero. This year, Gerry faced an unimaginable loss—the tragic and untimely passing of his only son. Despite this devastating personal tragedy, he has continued to serve our community with dignity, compassion, and resilience. His ability to keep supporting others while carrying such grief is a remarkable testament to his strength of character. Gerry doesn’t just volunteer—he uplifts, encourages, and brings people together. Even in his darkest days, he continues to shine a light for others. We believe Gerry above all, deserves this Local Hero Award not only for what he does, but for who he is. In a world often marked by division and uncertainty, Gerry reminds us of the enduring power of kindness, perseverance, and community spirit. To honour him is not only fitting—it is necessary. On behalf of your fellow workers, committee, and our local community who appreciate you so much. Gerry you are, without question, a true local hero. Well done.

Deepest sympathies: are expressed to the Mahedy family formally, of Coolnagun & later Uk and Mullingar, on the sad passing of Jimmy Mahedy Harbour St, Mullingar. Jimmy is Predeceased by his parents Tommy and Marcella Mahedy Coolnagun, Sister Marcella, Canada, and his beloved wife Evangeline. Jimmy will be very sadly missed by his dear daughters Natalie and Grace, his cherished grandchildren Rory and Maggie and Sebastian and Penelope, sons-in-law Paul and Matthew, his sister Noreen, Lucan, and brother Tom, England, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Congratulations and very well done to Inny Football team: Who wereDeservedly conferred as Team of the Year and Overall, Winners at the Westmeath Examiner Sports Awards Ceremony on Thursday evening last, this fine group of young men, their management team, and supporters "put Streete and Inny’s on the map of success" and serve as trailblazers for the club. It is a true testament to the dedication Richie, Niall and all the hard-working volunteer coach’s trainer’s and ref’s who give their time to train the team throughout the year starting with Inny F.C Sport Academy and the Underage Summer Camp which bread the ground of success as seen this year with a Connacht Cup and SFAI All-Ireland double title speaks for itself. A footballing miracle. The Inny faithful were proud people as they wore the black and yellow on memorable days in Castlebar, Dalton Park, Westport, and Kilkenny. Days that will live long in the memory and serve as inspiration for a long time to come. As quoted from a well-known sporting editor Damien Maher, Inny football club are undoubtably the best football club in the country. A Huge congrats to all involved. The main walled garden supplies vegetables, flowers and fruit for the cookery and flower arranging classes which are among the many Gardening and Lifestyle courses on offer at Coolamber. (www.coolambergarden.com) A small gardener’s cottage in one corner looks out over a water feature surrounded by lawns and cast-iron benches. A fine stone out-building has been restored and is now used during classes while another has been transformed into a cafe where the Ramblers enjoyed tea and scones. Moving to the House Ann Marie took the group through the dining room, sitting room, kitchen, and a landing room on the ornate stairs, recounting on the way the history of the house and all the work involved in its’ restoration.
Many thanks to Ann Marie for welcoming the Ramblers to Coolamber for such a fascinating afternoon tour.
