Boherquill Ramblers
The Ramblers met at Sonna National School between Mullingar and Ballynacargy on Sunday 25 January 2026 for a walk beside the Royal Canal. They walked towards Ballynacargy and turned back about 1.5 km from the village. A couple of the locks which were passed along the way had beautifully restored stone lock-keeper’s cottages.
The trees beside the canal were reflected in the calm water as the cool wind of previous days had eased. On Sunday 8 February 2026 the Ramblers will meet at 2pm in the car park behind Dealz in Longford town for a walk along the abandoned canal which was built to link the town with the Royal Canal. New History Call
Some time ago, I invited anyone with an interest in our local heritage to come together with the aim of creating a new multi-volume book on the history of our parish. The vision is an in-depth work that explores our story from the earliest times through to the last century, encompassing archaeology, townlands, military history, ecclesiastical history, and all that has shaped our community over generations.
This project will also follow the stories of love, war and adventure of people who left our parish for far-off places, and who still retain a strong connection with home today. It will be an opportunity for everyone to tell their story in their own way, representing our schools, our children, young people, the old and every household that feels they have something to contribute — from the cradle to the grave.
Our last book, launched in 2013, was a fantastic success. It formed the foundation for the largest gathering our parish has ever seen. I hope this new project will once again bring people together and provide the reason for another great gathering in the coming years, with collaboration and community spirit at its heart.
The response to the initial call was very positive, and I am delighted to say that a core group is now forming. If you would like to be part of this exciting venture — whether as a researcher, writer, storyteller, collector of photographs or memories, or simply as someone with an interest — you are very welcome to get involved. Call Kevin 087 1375222.

New Fire Safety Doors
We are delighted to see the long-awaited new fire safety doors being installed in the Parish Park. The old doors served their purpose well but did not conform to new modern safety standards and let in a lot of cold air. The new doors will be finished of in the coming week with draft and air tightness testing. It is amazing how inefficient the old doors had become, you can really feel the difference in the hall already. We are grateful to receive a grant to cover the cost from Local Government and thanks Padder Brady, Serchek, Mullingar and his team of local installers who have done a terrific job. Next phase is the installation of a new front door which is ongoing as we speak.
