Streete Notes

Chris Mulvany

Congratulations to Inny FC: What In an incredible story, Inny Football Club have captured the All-Ireland U14 Boys Cup title with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Freebooters of Kilkenny, at Evergreen FC Club, Kilkenny on Sunday last. A remarkable achievement for a small club in the corner of North Westmeath, with a limited playing membership and scant resources, it is truly a phenomenal achievement, again well done to the players, trainers and coaches, we look forward to a brighter future to all involved.

Boherquill Ramblers: The Ramblers met at the Park Hotel on Sunday 4 May 2025 for a walk to Baltrasna on the Royal Canal and then along the High Bank which overlooks the canal. Several boats passed along the canal heading for Mullingar as the group followed the trail in warm sunshine with the hawthorn hedges in full bloom. The local environmental group has erected a bug hotel and information boards pointing out the various types of trees and flowers along the way. On Sunday 18 May 2025 the Ramblers will meet at 2pm at the car park beside the Fire Station in Mullingar for a walk beside the Royal Canal.

Ramblers 2025 Walking Festival: took place on Friday 9 May and Sunday 11 May. Well done to Alice Nerney and the team who made the event such a success. The weather was perfect on Friday evening for the walk around the beautiful gardens of Tullynally Castle near Castlepollard and afterwards there were tea and scones in the Castle Tea Shop. On Sunday morning everyone met at Jane O’Reilly’s Coffee Shop in Fore for refreshments before travelling by bus to the start of the day’s 23km walk near the Float Bridge on the Coole to Lismacaffrey road. From there the walkers followed a Bord na Mona rail track for 5km through Coolnagun Bog where there were cuckoos calling from the nearby woods. A short stretch of road led to an old green road with some welcome shade from the hot sun before arrival at the lunch stop at picturesque Coolure harbor beside Lough Derravaragh. After lunch the route passed through Coolure Demesne and the grounds of Tullynally Castle before reaching Castlepollard where some of the group decided to travel by car to the end of the walk. Those with some remaining energy walked the final 7km to Fore through a network of quiet side roads offering views of the surrounding countryside with green fields and hedges full of hawthorn blossom. Dinner in the Castle Varagh Hotel in Castlepollard was a fitting end to the weekend for some members. Many thanks to all the Club members who worked hard before and during the Festival to make it so enjoyable. Thanks also to Jane O’Reilly of Fore Coffee Shop for the refreshments before and after Sunday’s walk, to Tullynally Castle Tea Shop on Friday night and to the Castle Varagh Hotel on Sunday evening. Thank you to Salmon’s coaches in Castlepollard who provided the bus on Sunday. Many thanks to Tullynally Castle and Coolure Demesne for permission to pass through their property. The assistance of Damien McHugh of Bord na Mona was appreciated when planning the route. On Sunday 25 May 2025 the Ramblers will meet at 2pm at Lismacaffrey for a road, bog and minor road walk led by Deirdre Leavy.
