Streete Notes

Chris Mulvany

Oskars re visited: January 18th: What can I say, the eagerly awaited night at the Oskars will now come home with a special screening in Streete Parish Park on Saturday 18th of January at 8 pm. The after-party celebration will continue for one night only to remember an event which will go down in the history books of a sheer delight from our cast, crew, extras, and members of our wider community. Our movie makers will be celebrated, our victory in the company of family and friends, all are welcome to attend. This will be a perfect end to Christmas and something to look forward to as we welcome the new year in celebration of bringing our community together for greater things to come. Again, thank you if it was not for you, your help and support this event would not have happened.

Sympathy: The entire Brady family would like to convey our grateful appreciation to everyone who went out of their way to sympathies with us on the sad passing of my dear brother Patsy Brady in England. Patsy left our parish at the tender age of 15 to follow an apprentice ship with London Transport where he spent the last 50 years until his retirement as head of his department. Patsy’s heart was always in his parish of Streete and Castlepollard, where his wife Mary (Nellie) Fivy hails from. Patsy kept up regular visits until his health went into decline. Unfortunately, after a short illness he passed away peacefully with great dignity. Patsy is preceded by his son, Peter Oct 2011. His parents Jimmy and Annie Brady, his brothers Sean, Phelim and Gene. He leaves behind his beloved Wife, Mary, (Nellie) nee Fivey, Castlepollard Daughters Angela and Sharon. Brother Kevin, Coolnagun. Sisters Ita England, Teresa, Wexford. Marian Swords, Brothers in law Sisters in Law, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and a wide circle of family and friends. Patsy was interred in a family plot in South End on Sea England on New Year’s Eve. May His Gentle Soul Rest In Peace

Fairy light tractor run Cancelled to a new date: Due to many drivers suffering with Flu. We have decided in the interest of fairness to everyone who want to take part, to cancel the run for the moment. We will run a new date in the new year. Sorry to disappoint.

Family Run Walk: The Annual Run/walk-in aid of St Christophers Edgeworthstown branch, which normally take place around now has now been postponed to a later date, due to Flu and poor weather conditions. Keep an eye on the notes for an update.

Congratulations: and best wishes to newlyweds, Chloe Oram, and John Kavanagh, Dublin. Who’s wedding took place recently. The happy couple along with family and close friends enjoyed a most memorable and beautiful day. Chloe is a daughter of Paul and Kiarn, Oram, Lisnagappagh, Lismacaffrey, who are delighted to add a son to the family. We wish Chloe and John every happiness in their future plans together and we wish them both a long and happy life filled with great joy, riches, and good health.

Parish Park: On behalf of myself, and the hard-working committee of Streete Parish Park we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all our staff and volunteers who selflessly give so much of their time and energy all year round to ensure the continuous delivery of valuable services to the community. Well Done. May I wish each and every one a Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh. For bookings, contact Gerry 0871230747. or Kevin 087 1375222.

Congratulations: And well done to Sean McNamara who has been re-elected as president of ICSA following a closely contested election in Portlaoise recently. Sean secured his position for another term after defeating fellow Westmeath man Dan Lynam in a vote of the association’s National Executive. Sean is well known in the farming community and fully committed to ensuring that ICSA remains a strong and effective voice for suckler, sheep, beef, and tillage farmers. We wish Sean the very best of luck in his continued role.

We hope you enjoy your stay and your time here with us. We would also like to remember all those who cannot make it home, especially those in hospital or rest care by wishing each and every one a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year. We look forward to seeing you over the holiday period and for some reason we don’t meet up we wish you all good health in 2025.

Oskars re visited: New date change: What can I say, the eagerly awaited night at the Oskars will now come home with a special screening in Streete Parish Park on Saturday 18th of January at 8 pm.

Streete Bowls: Christmas Doubles semi-final and final. In the first semi-final Mary Smith and Catherine Costelloe got the better of Gerry McCaffery and Eamon Carthy by a single shot. The other semi-final was a cliff hanger with Phyllis Martin and Pat Purcell just edging out Mick McLoughlin and Liam Connaughton. We have had some great finals in the past and this one was no exception. Both teams went shot for shot and after nine ends they were locked at seven shots each. In the ensuing end Pat and Phyllis emerged victorious. We would like to thank all the players who took part. A special word of thanks to our competition organiser Pat Kelly. We wish all the bowlers and their families a very happy and prosperous New Year.

Parish Park Walking Track Membership Update: Membership has been held back at a very nominal rate for many years. It was decided at an AGM in 2023 that the cost should rise. At a recent Committee meeting we concurred that the rate suggested at the AGM was a little high, a new rate has been agreed by the committee and membership will rise by €10 Single membership to €30, and a family to €50. I’m sure you will agree this is a very small charge for such a valuable amenity, we are also aware despite signage and your best efforts to keep our walking track free of dog litter. Some people ignore and continue to disrespect our grounds. To counter act this and improve safety and security we are looking at members access control system which will prohibit access to nonmembers. New membership application forms can be found in the box at the entrance gate of the walking track or by calling into the staff Monday to Fridays from 10 am until 2 pm. or call Kevin 087 1375222. All cheques made payable to Streete Parish Park.

Boherquill Ramblers: On Sunday 5 January 2025 the Ramblers will meet at SONNA NATIONAL SCHOOL, for a walk along the Royal Canal to Coolnahay and back. On Sunday 12 January 2025 the Ramblers will visit Glen Lough. Cars will meet at 1.30pm at Glen School near Edgeworthstown for a walk to Glen Lough and back. The Ramblers last walk of 2024 was in Ballinafid on Sunday 29 December. They walked the loop of boardwalk near Ballinafid Lake, on the way to Lough Owel and then followed the forest trail down to the Lough itself where the water was low enough to allow a short walk along the exposed wide stony beach. The Ramblers met beside the Fire Station in Mullingar for a walk beside the Royal Canal on Sunday 22 December 2024 for an out and back walk west along the Royal Canal. On their walk they passed Kiddy’s Bridge, Kelly’s Bridge and a couple of accommodation bridges, all beautiful old stone bridges built for the Canal’s completion in 1817. The harbor in Ballynacargy was as litter-free and tidy as ever with lots of ducks keeping an eye on visitors in case some food was on offer.
Thank you to Patricia Bruton for the delicious refreshments back at her house after the walk.
